This page summarizes Arizona DOT permit conditions for general reference. Always verify against the state permit office before dispatch — rules change, and individual permit conditions can be more restrictive.

Legal limits without a permit

In Arizona, you can move a load without an OSOW permit up to these dimensions on the Interstate and designated highways. Anything over the limits requires a permit (and may require escorts — see below).

DimensionWithout a permitPermit required when
Width8′6″ (federal limit)Anything wider
Height14′0″Anything taller
Combo length65′0″Anything longer
Gross weight80,000 lbAnything heavier

Escort and pilot car thresholds

When permitted, the following escort or movement-restriction rules apply in Arizona. Thresholds are conservative — your specific permit conditions may impose tighter limits depending on the route.

TriggerDimensionThresholdDetail
Rear pilot car Length 120'0" Escort required for combos over 120' overall (front and rear escort case-by-case per ADOT Class C review).
Front pilot car Front overhang 20'0" front overhang Front escort required when front overhang exceeds 20' (independent of overall length).
Rear pilot car Rear overhang 20'0" rear overhang Rear escort required when rear overhang exceeds 20' (independent of overall length).
Police escort Width 16'0" When more than 2 escorts are required (excess width/height/length/weight combined), Arizona requires 2 law enforcement escorts (R17-6-412 Table 4).
Height pole Height 15'0" Height-pole-equipped front pilot required for loads over 15' high (mandatory during 3am-sunrise weekend transport per R17-6-409).
Rear pilot car Width 14'0" Rear pilot car required for widths over 14' on Table 4 routes. Also required for any night/weekend movement over 11' wide.
Front pilot car Width 12'0" Front pilot car required for widths over 12' on Table 4 state routes (R17-6-412).
Daylight-only movement Width 10'0" Default operation is 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset. Loads exceeding 10'W / 14'6"H / 120'L / 250k lb / 10' overhang lose continuous-travel exemption and require daylight-only (or 3am weekend transport with escort accompaniment per R17-6-409).
Weekend / holiday restriction Width 10'0" No transport on 6 ADOT holidays (New Year's, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas) for loads exceeding 10'W / 14'6"H / 120'L / 3' front overhang / 10' rear overhang. Holiday windows extend to noon of preceding business day (R17-6-409).
